Top 10 favourites. Old-school party foods

  1. Sausage rolls – who knew that sausage meat wrapped in pastry would prove to be such a long-standing favourite? Hot or cold, with or without condiments, this classic dish is still loved by all!

  2. Vol-au-vents – no matter what these small flaky-pastry cases are filled with – prawn cocktail, coronation chicken, egg mayonnaise or ham – these little beauties always go down a treat!

  3. Scotch eggs – there has been a bit of a renaissance for the humble Scotch egg with the pork sausage meat wrapping being replaced by black pudding, smoked fish and even chili chicken! However, this savoury, egg-filled snack never loses its charm.

  4. Cocktail sausages – nobody knows what they are made of, but they are so moreish, and slip down so easily, that no one cares! Little, meaty mouthfuls of flavour – loved by party-goers of all ages

  5. Cheese and pineapple – this combination seems to have sprung out of nowhere and is as divisive as pineapple on pizza (what is it about pineapple that it causes so much trouble?) – you either love it or hate it. Still at least it will appeal to vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Well, at least to those who like it!

  6. Mini quiches – there is a saying that “real men don’t eat quiche”, but when these irresistible nibbles come with smoked salmon, chicken, and spinach and asparagus fillings as well as the more usual cheese, gender becomes an irrelevance.

  7. Pork pies – are sometimes viewed as slightly downmarket, unsophisticated snacks. Balderdash! The standard, porkie is a gem of a mouthful and when you add sundried tomatoes, bacon and mustard to the filling, it becomes almost ambrosial!

  8. Drumsticks – Legs. From a chicken. Cooked to perfection. Nuff said!

  9. Hummus – what a great way to make crisps, carrots and bread sticks useful! As utensils for scooping this earthy, garlic-laden nutty wonder, they can’t be beaten. And hummus is only the gateway to a whole world of dippy flavours – tzatziki, taramasalata and guacamole are just three, difficult to spell, creamy treats that anyone can make.

  10.  Butterfly cakes – everyone likes to finish off on a sweet note, and these mouthfuls of deliciousness really hit the spot! Light sponge, creamy butter-icing and optional fruit for those who are a little health-conscious!
